Upgrading your domestic consumer unit (also commonly known as a fuse box) can improve the safety and reliability of your home's electrical system.
Back to topA consumer unit upgrade replaces the old housing and fuses / switchgear contained within, with a modern one that complies with our current wiring regulations (BS 7671). Modern domestic consumer units now include RCBOs (RCD/MCB combined) for better protection against electric shock and fire as standard. The housings are made of metal which restrict the spread of fire should a loose connection within overheat, rather than feeding the fire with a PVC housing.
We install surge protection as standard with every domestic consumer unit upgrade, which protects against transient over voltages from the DNO supply side, helping protect sensitive equipment plugged in and hard wired to the electrical installation.
Back to topWe do not charge extra for issuing certification or building control notifications.
Back to topWe may require a local isolator to be fitted after the energy meter, so we are able to safely isolate the installation. Your energy supplier should fit this as standard during a meter change / upgrade or upon request, usually FOC.
The existing electrical installation should be safe to connect to a new consumer unit; otherwise, remedial work may be required.
It is a recommendation that a domestic electrical installation condition report (EICR / DEICR) is carried out prior to the upgrade as this would flag any concerns with the existing electrical installation.
Back to topTypically, 4–8 hours for a standard domestic unit, dependent upon the size of the installation.
It may take longer if additional issues are found, for example faulty wiring, borrowed neutrals or need for bonding.
